Korea University Proposes a Solution to Suppress Battery Thermal Runaway
Electrolyte design improves battery safety and presents a flame-retardant strategy

A research team led by Professor Seung Ho Yu at Korea University (President Kim Dong-One) has proposed an effective strategy to improve the stability of conventional organic electrolyte systems and suppress thermal runaway, one of the major causes of battery fires and explosions, by employing phosphorus-based flame-retardant additives.

This research was published online on March 26 in Advanced Energy Materials (IF=24.4), a leading international journal, and was also selected as a cover paper.

Recently, safety concerns surrounding lithium-ion batteries have continued to grow, particularly due to explosion incidents during charging in small mobility devices such as electric bicycles and electric scooters. One of the major causes of these accidents is thermal runaway, a phenomenon in which chemical reactions inside the battery accelerate rapidly due to external impact or overheating, potentially leading to self-ignition or explosion.

In particular, carbonate-based organic electrolytes widely used in lithium-ion batteries are highly flammable even at room temperature and can directly contribute to ignition.

Accordingly, extensive research has been conducted on flame-retardant electrolytes. However, most flame-retardant electrolyte systems developed so far rely on highly concentrated fluorinated salts or the introduction of large amounts of fluorine-containing components, which inevitably suffer from high cost and degraded battery performance. To address these limitations, Professor Yu’s team focused on phosphorus-based flame-retardant additives that offer strong cost competitiveness and excellent self-extinguishing properties, and proposed a new design strategy for improving electrolyte flame retardancy.

Phosphorus-containing compounds can function effectively even in small amounts and are advantageous for battery safety because they tend to generate relatively low toxicity during combustion. In addition, they have only a limited effect on the physical properties and electrochemical performance of the electrolyte, thereby reducing concerns about battery performance deterioration, while also offering the benefit of relatively low manufacturing cost. The team systematically organized the structure-dependent characteristics and working mechanisms of various phosphorus-based additives, and further presented their practical applicability and future material design directions. Based on this analysis, they established a concrete electrolyte design strategy to improve the safety and reliability of lithium batteries.

Professor Seung Ho Yu said, “This study demonstrates the feasibility of designing additives that can simultaneously secure flame retardancy and interfacial stability in batteries,” adding, “We expect that broadening the application of phosphorus-based additives will contribute to the commercialization of next-generation battery systems.”
