Professor Seung Ho Yu Enhances the Durability of Zinc Batteries with a New Electrode Protection Layer

A research team led by Professor Seung Ho Yu in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering at Korea University (President Kim Dong-One), in collaboration with Professor Young-Eun Sung’s team at Seoul National University, improved the stability and lifespan of aqueous zinc (Zn) batteries by implementing a new electrode protection layer using telluric acid.

This research was published online on August 8 in Advanced Functional Materials (IF=19), a leading international journal in the field of materials science.

Aqueous zinc batteries offer several advantages, including low fire risk due to their water-based electrolytes, low cost, and high capacity. However, they still face critical limitations during practical operation, such as anode corrosion and the accumulation of byproducts.

To address these issues, the research team applied telluric acid as an electrolyte additive because of its stable structural characteristics. As a result, they induced the spontaneous formation of a ternary artificial interphase composed of zinc oxide (ZnO), tellurium dioxide (TeO2), and tellurium (Te) on the electrode surface. Analysis showed that this artificial layer formed a robust structure, with ZnO and TeO2 distributed in the outer region and Te located in the inner region.

The team confirmed that the resulting artificial interphase suppresses byproduct formation and dendrite growth while promoting uniform zinc deposition on the electrode surface, thereby stabilizing the electrode environment. Electrochemical analysis further revealed that unnecessary corrosion current and charge-transfer resistance at the electrode-electrolyte interface were significantly reduced, while ion mobility was improved. In addition, zinc symmetric cells incorporating this artificial layer operated stably for more than 1,500 hours and exhibited superior performance compared with conventional systems even under conditions similar to practical operating environments.

Professor Seung Ho Yu said, “The spontaneous formation of a ternary artificial interphase on the electrode surface using a telluric acid additive effectively addresses the weaknesses of aqueous zinc batteries,” adding, “We expect this to become a key technology for accelerating the commercialization of next-generation eco-friendly batteries.”
