Professor Seung Ho Yu Real-Time Elucidates Lithium–Sulfur Battery Reactions Using Operando Optical Microscopy

A research team led by Professor Seung Ho Yu in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering at Korea University (President Kim Dong-One) used operando optical microscopy to observe internal reactions in lithium–sulfur batteries in real time and comprehensively elucidated the roles played by lithium nitrate additives across battery interfaces.

This work was published online on September 7 in InfoMat (IF=22.3), an international journal in the fields of materials and energy.

Lithium–sulfur batteries have attracted considerable attention as next-generation batteries because they offer low cost, low toxicity, and high energy-storage capacity. However, their practical application has been limited by several issues, including the low electrical conductivity of active materials, the polysulfide shuttle effect, and the instability of lithium-metal anodes. In addition, the repeated dissolution and precipitation of active materials have made it difficult to directly observe internal battery reactions, resulting in an incomplete intuitive understanding of the underlying reaction mechanisms.
*Active material: a material that directly participates in charge and discharge reactions to store and release energy.

To address these challenges, the research team developed an operando optical microscopy system capable of monitoring the internal behavior of lithium–sulfur batteries in real time. Using this platform, they directly observed the dissolution of lithium metal from the electrode and its subsequent redeposition, the dissolution and diffusion of polysulfides, and the precipitation and redistribution of sulfur as crystalline phases during charge and discharge. Furthermore, by quantitatively analyzing the recorded images, they were able to clarify battery-internal reactions that had previously been difficult to explain clearly.

In particular, the team found that interfacial reactions in the battery varied depending on the presence or absence of the lithium nitrate (LiNO3) additive. When lithium nitrate was present, a range of stabilizing effects was observed, including suppression of irregular lithium-metal stripping, mitigation of polysulfide migration, and improved uniformity of sulfur crystallization. These effects were shown to significantly enhance battery lifetime and stability.

Professor Seung Ho Yu said, “This study is significant in that it enables real-time observation of electrode–electrolyte reactions inside lithium–sulfur batteries,” adding, “By directly identifying changes caused by electrolyte components, it will help establish strategies for performance optimization.” He further stated, “Because this technique can also be applied to other battery systems, it is expected to play an important role in accelerating the commercialization of high-performance batteries.”

This work was carried out in collaboration with LG Energy Solution and was supported by the Ministry of Science and ICT, the National Research Foundation of Korea through the Basic Research Program, and the National Research Council of Science & Technology.
