Advanced Composites and Hybrid Materials (IF=21.8)

*TFA(thin-film assembled):

Professor Seung Ho Yu Develops a Next-Generation Water Electrolysis Membrane
Improving the Efficiency of Green Hydrogen Production

A research team led by Professor Seung Ho Yu in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering at Korea University (President Kim Dong-One), in collaboration with Dr. Soyoung Lee’s team at the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST), has developed a new multilayer membrane structure that simultaneously enhances the performance and durability of anion exchange membrane water electrolysis (AEMWE), a next-generation hydrogen production technology.
*Membrane structure: a thin membrane in a water electrolysis device that separates hydrogen and oxygen while allowing only ions to selectively pass through.
*Anion exchange membrane water electrolysis (AEMWE): a water electrolysis technology that splits water using a special membrane through which hydroxide ions migrate.

Title: A highly durable thin-film assembled membrane for efficient gas crossover suppression in anion exchange membrane water electrolysis

Water electrolysis is a key technology for producing high-purity hydrogen by splitting water using electricity. Conventional alkaline water electrolysis (AWE) has the advantage of using low-cost materials, but its structural characteristics allow hydrogen and oxygen to mix, limiting both efficiency and safety. Although anion exchange membrane water electrolysis (AEMWE) has emerged as a promising alternative, it still faces challenges in maintaining stable operation under high-temperature and strongly alkaline conditions.

To address these limitations, the research team designed a multilayer membrane structure with separated functions. At the center, they placed a Zirfon separator to provide mechanical support, while both sides were combined with polymer layers having different roles in a thin-film assembled (TFA) configuration. One side was designed to maintain structural stability even in strongly alkaline environments, while the other promoted efficient ion transport to improve water electrolysis performance.
*Zirfon: a porous separator material widely used in alkaline water electrolysis systems.
*TFA (thin-film assembled): a membrane design strategy in which multiple thin layers with different functions are stacked to enhance performance.

Experimental results showed that the newly developed membrane reduced hydrogen gas permeability by more than tenfold compared with conventional systems, significantly suppressing hydrogen-oxygen crossover. It also maintained stable hydrogen production performance even at high current densities and exhibited excellent performance when paired with low-cost non-precious-metal catalysts. In particular, it operated stably for more than 1,670 hours, demonstrating outstanding long-term durability.

This study is significant because it simultaneously improves gas-blocking capability, ionic conductivity, and mechanical stability, properties that are generally difficult to optimize at the same time in water electrolysis systems. The technology is expected to provide an important foundation for large-scale green hydrogen production systems and renewable-energy-based water electrolysis facilities.

The research team stated, “For the commercialization of AEMWE technology, it is important to go beyond simply developing high-performance, highly durable polymer membranes and instead adopt a design strategy that separates and integrates multiple functions,” adding, “This study provides a practical foundation for the commercialization of next-generation green hydrogen production technology by achieving long-term stable operation under high-current conditions.”
