A patent has been granted for a conductive polymer-coated tellurium nanotube electrode material technology for high-performance secondary batteries, jointly developed by Prof. Seung-Ho Yu, Mihyun Kim, and Dr. Jieun Lee. This invention was designed to address the dissolution of intermediate species and the shuttle effect that can occur when tellurium-based electrode materials are used in secondary batteries. The key concept of the patent is to form a conductive polymer layer, such as polypyrrole, on tellurium nanotubes composed of stacked tellurium atoms, thereby suppressing the dissolution of polytelluride intermediates while maintaining the electrical properties of the electrode material. In particular, the conductive polymer layer provides an encapsulating structure that protects the tellurium nanotubes, helping to reduce active material loss, self-discharge, and electrode instability during repeated charge–discharge cycling. As a result, the electrode material can deliver stable capacity retention and improved rate capability even under high-current conditions. In addition, compared with conventional strategies that rely on loading active materials into host structures, this approach can maintain a higher active material fraction within the electrode. This patent is expected to provide a promising electrode material design strategy for next-generation high-performance secondary batteries by simultaneously suppressing shuttle effects and improving energy density.
